Cochrane history: Tending to a bear cub

This week’s Cochrane history feature takes us back to April, 1994, and a report in the Cochrane Times about a young bear cub found wandering around, at least a month before it should have been out of hibernation.

Fifteen-year-old Ray Blackburn and his friend Steven Pope were told about the cub by the driver of an Abitibi truck near Camp 34. They ended up bringing the malnourished bear to a shed at Blackburn’s home.  Ray and his parents were taking care of the cub they named Teddy, until the MNR could find a good spot to release him in the woods.

Ray Blackburn, by the way, already wanted to be a conservation officer.

This history feature, as all of them, are made possible by the Cochrane Public Library and its archives.
