I.F. man sets out to clean up garbage in rural parts of the town

Erik Barron is on a mission to clean up all the garbage from rural areas around Iroquois Falls.

The 32-year-old miner’s first project was on Bell Telephone Road, just outside the municipal landfill. That’s where he found garbage he assumes was dumped by someone who went there on a Monday, when the landfill was closed.

Next was Devil’s Punchbowl, the most popular spot around for pit parties.

“So I did a huge sweep there, garbage sweep and raked the beaches and cleaned the fire pit out and I got rid of all the glass – well, as much as I could,” he remarks.  “Anyway, I did a massive cleanup.”

Barron says there’s more work to do outside the landfill, where he already removed two truckloads.  He says a lot of it was clothing that could have been put to better use.

“I’ve got to go back there,” Barron notes, “because there’s still couches, tables, there’s pallets that are broken down, there’s metal.  So I’m going there.  That’s my next stop.”

From there, he’ll  tackle the former ski hill. With him will be an air cadet who needs volunteer hours to qualify for a promotion.  He also hopes to get a group together to clean up the pit across Devil’s Punchbowl from the beach he already cleaned.
