Cochrane History – 1949 past theft revisited

In this week’s Cochrane history segment, we go way back to the 1964 edition of the Northland Post where a guilty conscience caused a man to step forward about a past theft.

The person told a Cochrane courtroom that he confessed to the break-in at the Mercier and Shirley Warehouse on June 10th, 1949. A large quantity of cigarettes had been stolen and the case remained on the unsolved list for nearly 15 years.

The court didn’t impose punishment but the judge felt the person was under enough undo stress. The Judge placed the self-convicted thief on suspended sentence for a year, and fined $10.

We thank the Cochrane Public Library for the use of its archives for our weekly history segment.
