Cochrane history: How ESCHS came to be

In our look back at Cochrane history last week, we reviewed the opening of the first high school on the peninsula in 1928.

That’s where we pick it up today with public library archivist Ardis Proulx-Chedore.

“The building provided adequate accommodations until 1938, when the Department of Education recommended courses in school work and home economics,” she recounts. “Two vacant rooms in Central School had been equipped in order to provide these classes.”

“The school’s attendance continued to grow and finally in 1971, the pupils of the old high school moved into a brand new building which had a new name, Ecole Secondaire Cochrane High School.”

The following year, Central moved into the old building and became Commando Senior Public.
