Government relief money comes in as Iroquois Falls ‘holding our own’ financially

Iroquois Falls town council will decide how to spend $285,000 in government COVID relief money.

High on the list for Mayor Pat Britton is increased security for frontline workers at town hall.

“We’ve had a few instances where it got pretty ugly for our staff,” he explains, “some very upset customers and the way town hall is set up right now, those people minding the front desk are cornered.  They’ve got no place to go.”

Another possible project is a ramp coming in from the back of the building, to bring it up to accessibility standards.

Overall, though, Britton says the town is faring quite well financially during the pandemic.

Britton confidently predicts that government relief efforts will soon disappear, despite an unknown future because of coronavirus.  So, he says, the town’s breaks on tax and water payments will have to end, too.

“We’ve done very well.  Everybody’s done an excellent job in their departments of looking after what they had to look after and not getting extended out where it’s not helping.”
