When rec facilities can reopen is a moving target: Director of community services

It’s very much a waiting game for the hockey rink and swimming pool at Cochrane’s Tim Horton Event Centre to get back into operation.  Of course, they were both abruptly shut down in March, when the coronavirus pandemic arrived.

Town of Cochrane community services director Jason Boyer says there’s no ice yet on the rink.

“We are set to put it back in, but we’re waiting on our user groups,” he explains. “Once they get permission to get it back on, then we’ll take a couple weeks to put it back in and we’ll be ready to go.”

The pool is being filled and once staff training on new safety protocols is done, it will open.  Boyer expects that to be September 8th.

He says it’s all an evolving plan, dictated by the Porcupine Health Unit and the provincial health ministry.  Boyer agrees that with new directives almost daily, it’s a moving target.

“Absolutely, that’s the thing, yeah. It keeps moving and there’s multiple pieces of legislation that we have to adhere to and cooperate with. So we’re trying our best and we’re trying to get these facilities up and running for everybody, for sure.”
