Child car seat safety check tomorrow in Iroquois Falls

Tomorrow’s the last Wednesday of the month, so the Porcupine Health is having a child car seat safety check in Iroquois Falls.

Public health nurse Jenessa Fortin is a certified car seat technician.  She and a colleague will take the seat out of your vehicle… see how you had it installed… whether it’s out of date… and approved for use in Canada.

“And then when we re-install the seat with the parent,” Fortin outlines, “we do a lot of education, making sure that the parents are aware how to install it in the future, because we realize that they’re not going to leave it in and forever leave it in that vehicle.”

Because car seats are often handed down, it’s important to check the expiry date.

“There’s always an expiry date on all car seats,” says Fortin. “They’re all different, but it’s actually written right on the car seat.”

Studies show that 85 percent of car seats are improperly installed.  Used correctly, they reduce the risk of death among infants by 71 percent, and 54 percent for kids aged one to four.

If you want an appointment for tomorrow’s inspection contact the Iroquois Falls office of the health unit.
