Carol Hughes confirms she will run for Speaker of the House of Commons

The New Democrat Member of Parliament for Algoma-Manitoulin Kapuskasing hopes the third time is the charm.

Carol Hughes confirmed this afternoon that she will be throwing her hat into the ring to become new speaker of the House Commons following the resignation of Anthony Rota.

That vote is expected to take place on Tuesday following the Federal holiday on Monday.

“I think there is a need certainly to have a female speaker,” she said. “There hasn’t been one ever elected to the House of Commons. There has been one appointed which was Jeanne Sauve, but never one elected.”

Hughes who is currently Assistant Deputy Speaker believes she is the right person to do the job.

“To do the review of what happened as well as to ensure that we have better decorum in the house because sometimes what we have seen lately is that even MPs seem to forget is that their not to challenge the chair, they should be abiding by the direction of the chair,” she said.
