Cochrane History – planes and colour televisions

In this week’s Cochrane history segment it’s the December 1973 edition of the Northland Post where the Cochrane-Iroquois Falls Board of Education approved the purchase of Colour Television sets for the students.

Trustee Frank Brown asked if the television purchase was justified and the superintendent replied yes if it is used properly and like any teacher’s aide it cannot replace the teacher.

Trustee AJ Taylor says that Sesame Street had a direct effect on children learning in kindergarten.

In the December 6th 1973 edition we also discovered that an Austin Airways D3 plane made a stop at the Cochrane Airport. It was charged by a local businessman to bring three tons of merchandise to Fort Albany on the James Bay Coast.

Pilot Ray McLean had two other members aboard the flight. He said the runway at the airport is of the best in this part of Ontario. The cargo included 10 snowmobiles, groceries and dry good packed around them.

The plane lifted more than 6,000 pounds of merchandise from Cochrane airstrip to Fort Albany.
