Sixth Ave. banners to honour Cochranites’ sacrifice in times of war

Lamp posts along Sixth Avenue in Cochrane will soon be adorned with banners honouring people of the town who gave their lives in times of war.

Gerry Robichaud spearheaded the project after seeing something similar in Parry Sound.

“We’re going to be putting up 19 banners,” he tells My Cochrane Now Dot Com. “On each side of he banner will be a different person that went to war for our community.”

The banners go up starting Monday until a week after Remembrance Day.

Robichaud says the Lions Club is the main financial backer, with the federal Veterans Affairs department and the local Legion helping out.  The town and Cochrane Telecom Services are putting up the 24-by-48-inch banners.

“It should be a real eye opener to be able to walk down the street and see some of our locals who gave their lives and of themselves to fight for not just Canada, not just Ontario, but for Cochrane, Ontario,” he remarks. He’s challenging young people to find a banner depicting someone they’re related to and on November 11th, stand by it for a moment of silence.
