Cochrane history: Drug stores

This week’s visit back in time to Cochrane’s history traces drug stores in town.

Based on ads and articles in the Northland Post now housed in the archives at the public library, the first Rexall store owned by F.W. Biggs opened in July, 1921.  In 1929 at least, it was next to the post office.

It went through various names until 1933, when it was bought by D.J. Wallace.  He owned it until his death in 1967.

A lot of us will remember it on the northwest corner of Sixth Avenue and Third Street.

Of course today, Wallace Drug Store is still on Sixth Avenue, but in the building that was originally Stedmans store. It’s owned by Frank Louvelle.

You can join library archivist Ardis Proulx-Chedore for Archives Live, Friday afternoons at 2:30 on the library’s Facebook page.
