Cochrane history: the boardwalk around Lake Commando

If you grew up in Cochrane in the 1960s, you’ll remember wooden sidewalks in town.

And even to this day, there’s a beautiful wooden boardwalk built around the gem in the middle of town – Lake Commando.

Cochrane Public Library archivist Ardis Proulx-Chedore has a bit of the history.

“Wooden walkways date back to 1917,” she recounts.  “The first official boardwalk around the lake was built in the late 1920s.

“The sidewalks and the lakeside boardwalk were originally intended for regular foot traffic.  When they were built early in the town’s history, there were no paved streets or concrete sidewalks.”
