Western gaming horse shows return to Porquis for another summer

This Saturday marks the opening of another season of western gaming horse shows on the Porquis Agricultural Fair Grounds.

Show organizer Jennifer Fry from the Porquis Pleasure Horse Club says there are seven shows planned over the summer.  You can see some of the same competitive events we see on TV during the Calgary Stampede.

“It’s western gaming horse shows,” Fry explains, “so basically it’s the high, fast-paced stuff with the horses, like barrel racing, pole bending, there’s a flag race. There’s something called dash for cash.”

There’s no fee for spectators, except for the last weekend of August, when the shows are part of the Porquis Fall Fair.

Competitors come from all over.

“We see people come in from Hearst, Kapuskasing, New Liskeard, Cochrane, Shillington area, even at times there’s people from Quebec as well that come in,” Fry says.
