Popular jackleg drilling competition back at Canadian Mining Expo

With all the mining activity cranking up the past several years around Iroquois Falls and Cochrane, everyone in our region has one connection or another to the industry.

You have a chance to see a demonstration disguised as competition on Wednesday, June 5th , during the Canadian Mining Expo at the McIntyre Community Centre in Schumacher. It involves jackleg drilling.

Frank Giorno handles communications for all the events surrounding the Expo.

“It’s one that highlights one of the basic skills in mining,” he says. “ That is drilling into solid rock for the placement of explosives, so you can get the ore ready to be scooped up and sent over to the mill for milling.”

There’s one category for mayors from our region and other celebrities; another for novice women who don’t work in the mining industry; and the professional category, for men and who women do work in mining.

“Specifically, the event takes place just north of the McIntyre Curling Rink,” Giorno notes.  It’s near a tepee that is part of a pavilion dealing with indigenous participation in mining.
