Sun dog mural added to laundromat wall is the work of an Iroquois Falls artist

The Express one-hour laundromat on d’Iberville Avenue in Iroquois Falls has a recent addition:  a mural of a sun dog, painted by customer Marc Cormier.

The 44-year-old artist is originally from Cochrane and came to the Falls via Ottawa, where he studied art.

He doesn’t make his living with his art, though. “It’s hard to sell something,” he notes. “People they just like to look at it.”

Cormier finds painting to be an escape from stress, and from the rest of the world.

“When I do paintings, I just get into it and I forget everything, concentrate on the painting,” Cormier observes.  “At night, I’m mostly inspired to do paintings on canvases.  Let’s say it’s nine o’clock and all of a sudden it’s midnight.  It went so fast.”

He finds, however, that the beginning of a painting is like work.

“Once I get an idea, okay, now I know where I’m going with it, it’s fun.  It just becomes inspiring.  It’s the fun part when you end the painting.”

Cormier says it’s important to know when you’ve reached the end.  Doing more adds nothing to the painting.  He also enjoys the sense of accomplishment.
