The 5th National Indigenous Women’s Summit in Toronto took place Monday, March 6th through Thursday, March 9th this past week.

Winnipeg Lawyer David G. Newman, who practices Aboriginal Law, says what was really important to take notice of at the summit, was that the federal government was finally represented.

Newman says the fundamental challenge and theme of the summit was to ensure indigenous women’s issues are being heard.

Newman says this was a step in the right direction for indigenous women, but there is still much work to do.
