Cochrane history: Girls hockey in 1994

We’re going back 30 years for this week’s feature on Cochrane history, and a pair of all-girls hockey teams in international competition.

The April 9th, 1994 edition of the Cochrane Times had a story about Katrina’s Kool Kats Peewees and Johnson’s Jewels Atoms.

“The two local teams took part in the biggest all-female hockey tournament in the world at Brampton,” said the article. “The annual tournament had over 200 teams competing, ranging from tykes to the women’s league. Teams from Russia, Sweden and California also took part.”

The Cochrane teams were in the C division and each won one of their three games.

Pat Whiting coached the Peewee team and Shirley Wessman and J.P. Cousineau were coaches of the Atom team.
