Cochrane history: Forming a fireworks club

In Cochrane history this week: the formation of a fireworks club in 1984.

Three women lit the fuse on the idea, frustrated with the lack of variety in Canada Day fireworks.

At a meeting attended by five people, a club to raise money for the oohs and ahhs was formed, led by Pam McInnis.  The Northland Post report on it said Coun. Juli Karam, representing the town, said the club wanted to make it more worthwhile for townspeople and visitors from as far away as Kap and Haileybury who came to Cochrane to see the display. She said it attracted $10,000 in spending.  Karma also promised to investigate government grants to help out.

Cochrane residents could become fireworks club members by paying a dollar at any bank in town.

Thanks to the Cochrane Public Library for access to its archives for the weekly history feature.
