Elissa Mayhew is a certified welder with two tickets at age 17

A 17 year old Eco Du Nord student in Kapuskasing has taken a high school trades’ course and apprenticeship to an all new level.

Earlier this month, Elissa Mayhew became certified welder with two tickets (which in welding terms its five total) at Maurice Welding. She says one of her memorable experiences to date was helping out at a project at Green First Forest Products Mill in Kap.

“Probably being confined space watch or fire watch for the other welders doing their jobs,” she said. “It was a real eye opening experience to be able to see what it’s really like in the mill and it made me think that I might like to be there one day.”

Today is International Women’s Day and Mayhew’s advice to other young girls is don’t be afraid to try something new.

“Don’t be scared and don’t let things hold you back,” she said. “Go for it, ask questions. Don’t be afraid to ask questions people will be happy to help. Eventually you will find something that works for you.”
