Mother Nature calls the shots, and her word is final. She decided that snowmobile oval racing on Lake Commando should not go ahead this weekend after all.
The Polar Bear Cup was up for grabs, but organizer Dan Girard says the shoreline is melting due to rain and run-off from the street, so the ice surface is not safe for racers or spectators..
He and his committee are not Mother Nature’s biggest fans right about now.
“Not really,” Girard admits. “We’d rather have somebody else. Give us an early summer, so we can go boating and camping.”
Girard and his committee say the races will be back next year, for the sixth edition.
“It would have been our biggest ever race (this year),” he notes. “We had $40,000+ to give to the racers and last year, we had $30,000. And we had racers as far as Main, Wisconsin, all over Québec that were coming, so it’s a big disappointment for everybody.”
