Cochrane history, 1994: Cell phone tower goes up, Aileen Wright School comes down

In Cochrane history this week, we try to remember what life was like before we all had cell phones.

The March 19th, 1994 edition of the Cochrane Times carried a front-page story about cell service expected to be offered by the end of the year.

Northern Telephone and Ontario Northland Telecommunications were working together on the project with the Cochrane Public Utilities Commission..

The tower would be built next to the new municipal water tower, so the PUC wouldn’t have to rent a site.”

PUC general manager Peter Murray made it clear that cell rates would not affect what people were already pay for home phone service.

On the same front page was a photo of people watching as demolition of Aileen Wright English Catholic School was underway.

The Cochrane Public Library’s archives provide all the material for our weekly history feature.
