Snowmobile trails in North remain open, although not ideal, in Northeast

Snowmobiling season is ongoing, at least north of North Bay.

Gilbert Fortin is governor-president of the Timiskaming-Abitibi Trail Association, encompassing seven groups along the Highway 11 corridor up to Hearst.

He’s hopeful for  more snow and cold weather, adding that despite the paltry amount of snow we’ve had, operators are doing very well keeping the trails in shape.

“Closer to the road is where the trails are really taking a beating,” he observes. “But out in the bush, in the forest, the snow is actually still very good.”

Your first stop before firing up your machine should be the Ontario Federation of

Snowmobile Clubs interactive map.

“I can’t talk on behalf of the condition of (the trails),” Fortin states. “Yellow means they’re not as good as green. They’re still available, they’re still there.  Yellow is just that you have to be careful.”
