Winter carnival snow box derby provides fun while complying with the law of gravity

The Cochrane Classic Vintage Riders Snowmobile Club is again organizing a marquee event for the Chimo Winter Carnival.

On Friday night, February 10th at 7:00pm is the annual snow box derby. It’s at the Queen Elizabeth Park sliding hill.

Imagination is encouraged.  Vintage Riders executive member Dan Girard says the only rule is that whatever you’re riding has to resemble a snowmobile.

“They could use a toboggan,” he outlines. “They can use any type of sleigh as their base to start from. Those Snow GTs are popular.”

You can get really artistic and use a cardboard box.  Girard says R and R Automotive has plenty of them for free. There’s a plaque available for the people’s choice award.

The derby is for kids up to 12 years old.

“The first year, actually, after the kids were done sliding, a few of the grandfathers challenged each other and the grandfathers went at it and it was hilarious,” says Girard, adding that a repeat of that is encouraged.
