The Montreal Canadiens set a franchise record last night  by beating  the New York Rangers 3-0 and starting a season with five straight wins. Carey Price made 25 saves for the shutout. Elsewhere Pittsburgh shut out Ottawa 2-0, and St Louis skated to a 4-2 win over Edmonton.

The New York Mets are moving on, they beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 3-2 last night and will take on  the Chicago Cubs  in the NL Championship Series . Meanwhile the Toronto Blue Jays have set their rotation for the ALCS against the Kansas City Royals. Marco Estrada will open the series for the Jays, to be followed by David Price, Marcus Stroman and R.A. Dickey. Game 1 goes tonight at 8

The New Orleans Saints handed the Falcons their first loss of the season beating Atlanta 31-21 in the NFL Thursday Nighter. Drew Brees passed for 312 yards.
