Cooperative effort leads farmers market in Cochrane to succeed despite pandemic

For something that almost didn’t happen because of COVID-19 and got started about a month late, this year’s farmer’s market in Cochrane is considered a resounding success.

It was a joint effort of the two market groups – the Cochrane Farmers Market that usually operates at the Commando Pavilion, and the agricultural society, which sets up its market at the fairgrounds.

Market chair and ag society director Heather Brouwer applauds the cooperation.

“We’ve successfully put on a market,” she comments. “We’ve successfully kept vendors and customers safe, so I would say it went really, really well between the two groups.”

After starting on Saturdays in early August, the market soon responded to demand, and added a Thursday evening session.

Brouwer says, however, that it’s too early to predict what will happen in 2021.

“The Fresh from the Farm market will likely continue, depending on the pandemic and what is possible there. And I think both groups would likely be open to working together in the future. We haven’t had those discussions yet.”
