Memory time, as we take our weekly look at Cochrane history.
If you’re of a certain vintage, you will recall that before there was a merge lane at the bottom of the Sixth Avenue hill, there was a fountain.
It was called the Commando Lake Centennial Fountain, and was a joint project of the municipality and the horticultural society for Canada’s one-hundredth birthday in 1967.
That was in the days before mandatory volunteer hours in order to graduate from high school, yet for a few years, students walked over from Cochrane High School – then also beside the lake – to help tend to the flowers in the Chimo Garden, right next to the fountain.
The public library has an extensive local archive, if you ever want to research Cochrane history.
