Cochrane mayor wants regional approach to relaxing COVID-19 measures

He won’t get unanimous agreement from his fellow municipal leaders, but the mayor of Cochrane thinks this region should not be stuck with the same timetable to reduce COVID-19 measures as the rest of Ontario.

Denis Clement says he truly believes the process should be regional, noting that this district hasn’t had a positive coronavirus test in three weeks.  However, he says we can’t drop our guard.

“The only drawback is if people leave the region and go to let’s say the Greater Toronto Area and then come back, it may open up some new cases,” he cautions.

“Although again,” he points out, “we need to keep the two-metre distancing and refrain from visiting non-family members if at all possible.”

Amid the possibility of bringing the virus back up north, he says taking all the current precautions would be imperative.

Mayor Clement estimates that 80 to 90 percent of people in the region wouldn’t go south, anyway, and notes that because of the smaller population, the risk of contracting the virus is lower.
