Iroquois Falls cogeneration plant good at least until end of 2021

With other electrical cogeneration plants in the region facing uncertain futures, a spokesman for Northland Power says its Iroquois Falls plant will be operating at least until the end of 2021.

Senior director of public affairs David Timm says the plant continues to produce electricity that’s available to the grid when demand warrants.

“So it depends on market conditions, it depends on need in the system, either regional or local as to whether it generates on a regular basis,” he explains.

Timm adds that Northland Power is exploring new opportunities and is in ongoing discussions with the province and the Independent Electricity System Operator, all based on system conditions and market demand.

“We are in constant conversations in terms of what that supply need looks like going into the 2020s and beyond and I can’t give you a specific date, but we are continuing those discussions.”

Asked if that means status quo will be maintained for the next 22 months, he replies “Oh, absolutely.”
