Angus Releasing Details Of National Action Plan On Suicide

Timmins-James Bay MP Charlie Angus will be releasing details of his national action plan on suicide in Timmins today.

Angus has created the action plan as a response to a recent Mushkegowuk Tribal Council Emergency Summit, to make the federal government aware of the possible suicide crisis in Canada.

Angus says the federal government needs to step up to the plate, and needs to address the crisis in both Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities.

He says the plan will create an approach that looks to reduce suicide through a public health surveillance program, as well as committing to Indigenous priorities and creating national training standards.

When asked about how successful his strategy could be, Angus points to Quebec’s drop in suicide rate of a third since implementing a comprehensive suicide prevention strategy.

The plan will be presented to parliament for debate following Angus meeting with Mushkegowuk.
