West Nile Virus found in our area

An American crow has tested positive for West Nile Virus in our region, prompting Northeastern Public Health to remind us to protect ourselves.

The last infected birds in these parts were in 2024.

West Nile can be contracted via mosquito bite, after the mosquito has bitten the infected crow.

Public Health program manager Suzanne Lajoie says the risk of becoming sick is low, but symptoms can range from mild to severe.

Here’s her advice on protecting yourself:

  • Wear light-coloured, long-sleeved shirts, long pants, shoes, and socks when outside, especially from dusk to dawn, when mosquitoes are most active.
  • Use an insect repellant containing DEET or Icaridin and follow manufacturer’s directions for use.
  • Repair holes in screens, windows, and doors.
  • Eliminate sources of standing water in yards so mosquitoes cannot lay their eggs.
  • Empty bird baths every other day and cover rain barrels with tight-fitting mosquito proof screens.

Residents who find a dead bird can report it to the Canadian Wildlife Health Cooperative at 1-866-673-4781. Do not handle dead birds with bare hands, instead use a shovel to dispose of it or, if handling is unavoidable, wear rubber gloves and wash hands with soap and water after handling.
