Three volunteers in Iroquois Falls are hitting several points by organizing a Dining in the Dark event.
Tammy Morrissette, Melanie Peever and Jacinthe Bourgoin are staging it on Friday, November 20th at the Legion.
Proceeds will go to the Northern Ontario Animal Welfare Society and the Bill Harkins-Eugene Ricard Santa Claus Fund.
Morrissette says diners will be blindfolded and told where various foods are on their plates, without divulging exactly what the food is.
“Everything is very secret,” she notes, “so the menu won’t be advertised and people won’t be able to find out what they’re eating.”
You can get tickets from the organizers. They’re $80 each. Morrissette says if you have allergies, they’ll tell you whether the secret menu is okay for you.
Dining in the Dark will give you an idea of what it’s like to live with blindness or partial vision loss.
Morrissette quotes the CNIB saying 1.5-million Canadians identify as having vision loss. An estimated 5.59-million have eye disease that could lead to sight loss.
“It’s quite a few people that are living in Canada that are affected by this,” Morrissette says, “and it’s nice to know, to have awareness and understanding and some empathy.”
