In Iroquois Falls, half the proceeds of the Tim Hortons Holiday Smile Cookie campaign are going to Earl Porter Lanes. The other half is for the Tim Hortons Foundation summer camps.
Liz King chairs the volunteer committee that operates Earl Porter Lanes. It’s been working for a while to raise $200,000 to modernize the bowling equipment. It’s 50 years old.
“We just celebrated our 30th anniversary this year. We had a couple anniversary celebrations at the bowling alley,” notes King. “But the equipment, when they purchased it, was already used.”
In the past year, the committee had to spend $18,000 for a new computer system and $5,000 to get one of the lanes working. The biggest obstacle is that most of the parts are obsolete.
“Anything we try to get, it’s a scramble and I’m calling around and I’m looking and the company that we deal with is doing their best to try and find parts for us,” King relates. “So when I know that a part is obsolete, I buy whatever they have.”
The cookies are on sale November 17th to 23rd. King’s looking for volunteers to help decorate them.
