Cochrane history: Finally a highway bridge over Hwy. 11

In Cochrane history this week: What was believed to be the longest Bailey bridge ever built in Ontario at that time, was erected across Hwy. 11 in 1956.

The Northland Post issue of September 6th, 1956 told how it replaced traffic using the Abitibi Paper Company dam over the Mattagami River, which began as a temporary measure 26 years earlier.

Being a Bailey bridge, it was also temporary. A permanent bridge was expected to be built over the next 18 months.

Thanks, as always, to the Cochrane Public Library for the ongoing use of its archives.
