Paddling around the lake a big event on Labour Day 1976

Cochrane history now and we go back 50 years to Labour Day, 1976 for canoe racing.

It was billed the first annual Labour Day Commando Lake Canoe Race.

The Northland Post reported on its front page that Bill Weisflock Sr. and Bill Weisflock Jr. won the men’s doubles event. It included an over-the-hill portage.

Wayne Weisflock and Bob Smith won the boys under 16 race, and keeping the Weisflock name prominent, Bill took the men’s singles title, although the report doesn’t specify Senior or Junior.

Organizers Mike Begley and Don DeFinney hoped to make it an annual event.

A tip of the paddle to the Cochrane Public Library for access to its archives.
