Two Kapuskasing demolition derby teenaged cousins will be trading metal with other youth from across North America in October. Rylee Godin and Miah Mercier will attend the national championship in Washington, Ohio south of Columbus after their first and second place showing at Kap Kraze last month.
Godin says she is curious about who the competitors will be at the national event.
“And I am very excited to see if there are other girls there, because like thinking about it there will be guys apart from me and Miah but if there was another girl there it would be really awesome to see.”
The two cousins are not new to the sport of demolition derby; Mercier says they’ve been competing for about four years.
“And what got me into derbies is my uncle Kevin Godin, Rylee is my cousin but I remember going to watch them and do derbies out of town and got me really interested into it and it just got me really invested.”
Rylee Godin who only has her G1 license, says it’s very different driving in a derby, but noted that the experience has helped familiarize her with driving on the road.
The two girls noted that they’ve played badminton together in school but are devoted to their craft of demolition derby.
