The manager of emergency and outbreak with Northeastern Public Health says planning ahead is important when there is extreme heat and humidity. The Cochrane-Kapuskasing and Timmins area is under its third day of extreme heat warning. Sandra Lapajne says finding a place to stay cool is critical.
“So on hot days finding a place to stay cool if our home has air conditioning. And if we don’t have air conditioning at home finding a cool areas like retail shopping centres, public libraries, or shaded areas outdoors.”
Lapajne says those at risk vary and it’s important to consult your physician or healthcare provider for further information.
“These are individuals that may have breathing difficulty, heart problems, hypertension, kidney problems, mental illness or individuals who are taking medication or have a health condition that may interact with the heat.”
Some symptoms of excessive heat are extreme thirst, rapid breathing, dizziness or fainting, nausea and vomiting.
