Kap mayor offers airport to federal government as wildfire aviation hub

The Mayor of Kapuskasing thinks that his town’s airport would be a perfect location for a northern wildfire aviation hub. Dave Plourde wrote to the federal government after learning of funding being announced for additional aircraft and equipment to help firefighting efforts across the country. He says that the airport has a lot to offer.

“Seeing that we are central to the Boreal Forest, the trees that surround us, and of course the ability to have an airport that can host, and that we are really not that busy of an airport,” he said. “We can be a really good host for planes that they are trying to purchase here.”

The plan also got backing from the MP of Kapuskasing-Timmins-Mushkegowuk.

“Gaetan Malette has sent a letter of support to host.” he said. “We are just waiting on a contact back, so this was just two weeks ago so we are just waiting to see what kind of ideas they may have.”
