The world of mining is concentrated in Timmins this week

More than 40 countries are represented at the Canadian Mining Expo that’s taken over the McIntyre Community Building and its surroundings until Thursday.

Among the delegations is one from Tanzania composed of 64 people.

Discovery Silver – whose CEO is local boy Tony Makuch — is a gold sponsor of the mining show. Its senior VP of Timmins operations, Dawid Myburgh says Discovery has big plans for the Timmins camp.

“Between potential and realized potential is a lot of hard work and a lot of partnerships,” he told the official opening of the event. “When I say partnerships, it includes everybody here at CME, whether it’s suppliers, the contractors, various consultants.”

Myburgh says the key stakeholder is the local community, and his company is excited to turn potential into ounces and provide good, long-term jobs.

“It’s not our right to mine here, it’s our privilege to mine here, so we intend to be here for a long time and we want to be good corporate citizens, make sure we do it the right way.”
