MNR fire crews and heavy equipment are still battling hard against Timmins 12, the forest fire that’s over a week old, north of Gogama and close to Highway 144.
It hasn’t grown in a couple days, yet is still considered not under control.
Fire information officer Evan Lizotte says progress is, however, being made.
“Monday’s hot and dry weather provided an opportunity for the forest fuels to recover from previous precipitation,” he explains, “creating a visual reference for our fire crews to identify areas of the fire that are still continuing to burn and require suppression action.”
Lizotte says three new pieces of firefighting equipment have joined the fight.
“A total of 15 Ontario Fire Ranger crews, a 20-person incident management team, seven pieces of heavy equipment and five helicopters are currently dedicated to this fire.”
Two of the helicopters are dropping water on the blaze.
A new blaze was reported in the same general vicinity late Monday afternoon. Timmins 13 is being held at 1.7 hectares – that’s just over four football fields.
Timmins 12 was reported Sunday and is under control at only half a hectare.
