The Town of Cochrane has proposed a district Energy model which would be the first of its kind in Ontario. This model would allow Cochrane power to supply power to the district instead of the provincial grid. Cochrane’s mayor Peter Politis says this would allow Northern Ontario Wires to drop the price of hydro and if it has a positive impact more and more places across the province could follow suit.  Another benefit Politis mentioned was the fact they would be able to provide cheaper food for the region and coastal communities by using excess steam to heat greenhouses.
