The Porcupine Health Unit is providing an overview of the health status in the area. The PHU says their catchment area is higher than the provincial average when it comes to diabetes, heart disease, and preventable cancers. Marty Paul, from the health unit, says the obesity rate is also rising significantly higher than the provincial rates. Paul says a lot of chronic diseases are preventable, if the community makes healthier food choices and engages in regular physical activity. However, he also points out buying healthy groceries is about 70-dollars more per month in the north than it is in the south.
