Northlander Passenger train return remains on time and on budget

Design work on the new Terminus Timmins for the Northlander Passenger Train is complete and the project is out to tender. That’s the word from Ontario Northland Transportation Commission chairman Al Spacek. He notes that progress to restore service is coming along on time and on budget.

“It’s important to note that in the railway world, time lines are very long so certainly it takes time to implement a brand new service from scratch into production or scheduled service,” Spacek said.

He says tagging onto an order by VIA Rail to manufacture the state of the art train sets has been a major boost or the time line might have been pushed further down the road.

“One example is that from North Bay to Timmins this government has invested over $70 million just in track upgrades.and welding the track,” he noted. “You won’t be hearing the click-it-kee-clack anymore. It will be a nice solid well define run.”

The new Northland Passenger train from Timmins and Cochrane to Toronto is expected to be ready for 2026.
