Cochrane, April, 1995: A new art studio and gallery opens

A new studio and art gallery that opened 30 years ago is the focus of our weekly feature on Cochrane history.

Ehkwatch was owned by professional artist Betty Albert. In a feature in the Cochrane Times-Post on April 1st, 1995, she’s quoted saying it had no literal translation into English, but it can mean “cool”, “bang on” or other expressions of a job well done.

The gallery was at the old Legion Hall on Second Ave., which was then owned by the Ininew Friendship Centre.

Albert said she wanted to bring an art industry to Cochrane, giving the excellent artists in the community a way to make their work familiar with the whole world.

Thanks to the Cochrane Public Library for the use of its archives for our history feature.
