In Cochrane history this week, the discovery – again – of the plane that crashed, killing Timmins native and Toronto Maple Leaf Bill Barilko (bah-RILL-ko).
The April 8th, 2005 issue of the Times-Post carried photos and the story about a search plane finding the crash site north of Cochrane.
Barilko was on a fishing trip on the aircraft piloted by Timmins dentist Dr. Henry Hudson when it disappeared during the summer of 1952. It was a few months after 24-year-old Barilko scored the Stanley Cup-winning goal for the Leafs.
The plane was spotted in the 1950s hanging in the trees, but the site wasn’t mapped and was soon grown over. The 2005 expedition was bankrolled by Tembec, in the hopes that a commemorative plaque could be erected at the scene.
Thanks, as always, to the Cochrane Public Library for the use of its archives every week.
