Cochrane history: A medallist in Special Olympics

We’re talking about a champion is this week’s Cochrane history feature.

In 1985, Louise Erdelyi came home from the International Special Olympics with one gold and one silver medal in cross-country skiing. The games were held in Park City, Utah.

In the April 3rd issue of the Northland Post, 20-year-old Erdelyi said she was so happy at the medal presentation, she cried.

While in Park City, she shared a condominium room with Nicole Ferguson of Timmins, who brought home a bronze medal and a fourth-place finish in downhill skiing.

Erdelyi’s gold medal was for 300 metres, the silver in one kilometre.

We owe our weekly local history feature to the archives at the Cochrane Public Library.
