As we sniffle and cough our way through this year’s cold that will not go away, our local history feature takes us to a school closure 20 years ago.
The Cochrane Times-Post of March 4th, 2005 reported on five schools being shuttered for three days because of a flu bug. It was running rampant among staff and students. Absenteeism hit 22 percent when the Porcupine Health Unit recommended the closure.
Janitorial staff spent the time disinfecting the schools.
Even once the schools reopened, several pupils stayed home, suffering from symptoms that usually lasted three or four days.
Thanks to the Cochrane Public Library for the use of its archives for this and every week’s history feature.
