Returning officer applies for Mushkegowuk-James Bay Election recount

As expected the returning officer for the riding of Mushkegowuk James Bay is applying for a recount following the official tabulation of last Thursday’s Provincial Election results.

The official numbers adjusted the margin of victory for New Democrat Incumbent Guy Bourgouin over Conservative and Kapuskasing Mayor Dave Plourde from four votes to eight. Bourgouin finished with 3,610 votes, while Plourde had 3,602.

It’s second recount ever in Northeastern Ontario with the first one for Cochrane North in 1981. According to Elections Ontario, a recount is done manually although vote counting equipment is used on Election Day.

Candidates can be present for the recount or they can send a representative.
