Our region is piloting two new federal project to match immigrants to employers looked for skilled labour. One of them is aimed at francophones.
That region covers Calstock to the Québec border, south to Temiskaming Shores and west to Foleyet.
The projects are being coordinated by the Timmins Economic Development Corporation. Community development consultant Madison Mizzau says one big difference form past programs is these ones are employer-driven.
“And so, employers will go through a designation process that includes mandatory online training for themselves,” she states. “There’ll be specific and focussed priority sectors and occupations as well.”
Mizzau says an online survey aimed at employers is now live. It centres on identifying priority sectors and priority occupations.
“We really need to hear from employers what their current labour demands are, what their current jobs are that they’re finding hard to fill with Canadian citizens, permanent residents and then also what thei4r immediate future needs are.”
The programs aim to put 230 immigrants into jobs every year for the next five.
