Snowmobile trails gradually opening

Snowmobilers are all happy with the white gold that’s fallen the past week or so.  However, the president of the trail association that stretches form Timiskaming Shores to Iroquois Falls says more freezing is still needed to firm up a few marshy areas.

Gilbert Fortin is happy that trails are finally opening.

“Timmins finally has a complete loop around the city,” he says, “and we’re slowly connecting to outside areas from Timmins and also connecting like from Kirkland Lake to Matheson to Iroquois Falls.”

Fortin pleads with sledders to stay on the trails. Some landowners revoked permission to cross their properties because of snowmobiles going off-trail. Fortin says it was “a horrendous job” to negotiate new agreements.

“And it’s been really, really taxing on our volunteer base. So having said that, we’re always open for new help and the ones out there that complain right away should be the first ones that come ahead and give us a hand.”

Fortin says the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs online interactive trail guide is up to date on new routes and trail availability.
