The end of a four-month long strike made the front page of the Cochrane Times on January 21st, 2000, and is the topic of this week’s local history feature.
The workers with Community Living voted 87% in favour of the new deal with their board. It gave them a one-percent raise in each of two years. Full-time staff were guaranteed every second weekend off. Part-timers got two out of every six weekends.
Group homes on Third and Seventh Streets were set to open January 29th, with the remaining group home and day program following two days later.
Board chair Bill Mulligan and union chief steward Francine Coté were both quoted as being relieved the work stoppage was over.
Thanks, as always, to the Cochrane Public Library for the material for our weekly feature.
